Ban singleuse plastics within three years, MP says

The UK should ban all single-use plastics within three years, a Scottish MP will tell the Liberal Democrat conference today.

Alistair Carmichael will ask Lib Dem activists to back his “Save Our Seas”campaign and adopt party policy to make disposable plastics a thing of the past. The Orkney and Shetland MP said the bold step was “exactly the kind of ambition this government needs if we are to reverse the tide of plastic flowing into our oceans”.

“The Tories are full of hot air and no credible action. Instead of chasing headlines, government ministers should be setting out clear and transparent targets to end the plastics crisis,” Mr Carmichael will say. “We demand immediate action to challenge our throw-away culture and to stop the oceans from becoming a plastic soup.”
