Fife candidate can’t rely on family to oust SNP

- By PARIS GOURTSOYANNIS

She may only have to overturn an SNP majority of two, but even with such a tight margin, Wendy Chamberlain can’t be sure of her husband’s vote.

That’s because the Liberal Democrat candidate for North East Fife is married to an SNP activist.

The Lib Dems lost the seat that once belonged to Sir Menzies Campbell in 2015, when it was seized by the SNP’S Stephen Gethins. In the 2017 snap election, however, he was left with the smallest majority in the UK.

During an event at the Lib Dem conference in Brighton yesterday, former party leader Nick Clegg revealed the domestic political divide when Ms Chamberlain, a former police officer who works for Diageo, asked about the impact of Brexit on the future of the UK.

“Wendy’s husband is an SNP activist, so the courage with which she is standing is way beyond the call of duty,” Mr Clegg joked.

When she was selected, Ms Chamberlain said she was “determined to stop another independence referendum”.
