Matthaus slams fans following riot

- By MARK WALKER LOTHAR MATTHAUS “They lost a derby but they should not have acted like that”

Rangers’ Europa League opponents Rapid Vienna have been slammed by their former manager, Lothar Matthaus, as their fans tried to storm the pitch after they lost a derby clash, seriously injuring two policemen.

Steven Gerrard’s side will face the Austrians in their Europa League group along with Spartak Moscow and this week’s opponents Villarreal.

But Rapid were severely criticised after they lost the capital derby to rivals Austria Vienna.

Hundreds of their fans tried to storm on to the pitch at their new Allianz Stadium home and caused the injuries to the policemen.

Riot cops waded into the trouble and there were still battles 30 minutes after the final whistle. German legend

and former boss Matthaus, who now works as a TV pundit, was critical of the supporters.

He said: “Things like that don’t belong in football.

“I understand the bitterness of the Rapid fans because they have lost a derby and started the season very poorly.

“But they should not have acted like that. They have no business trying to get on the pitch.”

Rangers travel to Austria for their final Europa League group match in December.
