BASEBALL

The St Louis Cardinals snapped a fourgame losing streak to reclaim a grip on the second National League wild card spot, downing the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-0 at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals are now tied with the Dodgers in the wildcard standings, largely thanks to an impressive outing from Adam Wainwright.

The pitcher struck out nine across six scoreless innings – a season high – and allowed only two hits and three walks. The Dodgers, having previously recorded a three-game sweep over the Cardinals, are now second in the National League West, a half-game behind the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies moved to the division top spot after edging the San Francisco Giants 3-2, while the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Mets 4-3 to edge nearer to the American League East title.
