#STORMALI

Storm Ali’s ferocious winds caused disruption across central and southern Scotland. A major incident was declared in Dumfries and Galloway and 500 people were rescued from a cruise liner adrift in the Clyde. Most Scotrail trains in the Central Belt were cancelled and the Edinburgh-london line was blocked.

@Suptrthomas tweeted: “Best to avoid Princes Street and areas around the Tron, High Street, where roads closures are in place due to loose masonry. Stay safe!”

@asibiza1 posted: “Thank goodness we took the train to London.”

@claudinegabri_ added: “Not really keen to step outside today. #Stormali hitting very hard.”

@Jodiemcnair joked: “No complaints here about the heavy rain .. my car has just got itself a solid wash which was probably well overdue!”

#JACKS

Tesco has unveiled a new store brand, Jack’s, which the retail giant has aimed at rivalling Lidl and Aldi. @matttviews pointed out: “The “#Jacks” is popular slang in Ireland for the “toilet”.” @mountain_maud added: “Cheaper Tesco I don’t get it why don’t they just reduce their prices.”

@bridge_53 suggested: “So Jacks’s will go head-to-head with #Aldi and #Lidl but Dave Lewis and colleagues intend to continue to rip-off shoppers at Tesco - I think he’s lost the plot!”

#DENISNORDEN

Comedy writer and TV presenter Denis Norden, best known for his It’ll Be Alright on the Night programme, has died aged 96.

@Gregscotttv tweeted: “Just heard about Denis Norden. The gentlest of gentlemen. The kindest soul. The loveliest human being. Met and worked with him on Countdown a number of times and was always an utter joy to be around. A very sad start to the day. Sleep well, Sir.”

@aviashea said: “If you’re like me & you used to watch It’ll be all right on the night when you were younger you’ll tip your hat to Denis Norden. Great Spitting Image puppet too.”

@Hungryhatter praised: “Just woken up to see the news that Denis Norden’s died. Not many people can be called a giant of British comedy, but he certainly can.”
