Honouring Hussein: Self-flagellation ceremonies for Mohammad’s grandson

A Pakistani Shiite Muslim flagellates himself during a religious procession on the ninth day of holy Islamic month of Muharram in Peshawar.

The Islamic month marks the seven-century martyrdom of the Prophet Mohammad’s grandson Imam Hussein, who was killed in battle in Karbala in Iraq 680 AD.

Meanwhile,drimranhamid Shaikh barred Afghan refugees from entering the city for the first ten days of Muharram. The ban did not include Afghans living in the city. The ban also included renting cars and motorcycles, chalking on walls and displaying weapons or using vehicles with fake ID.
