Konta and Wozniacki bow out in Tokyo

-

Johanna Konta let a big lead slip away in the second set as she was beaten by Donna Vekic in the second round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open.

The British No 1’s fragile confidence was again to the fore as, having led 4-1 with a double break, Konta lost six of the last seven games to go down 6-3, 7-5 in Tokyo.

Croatian Vekic struggled on serve in the first set but Konta was unable to take advantage and dropped her own serve twice. The 27-year-old looked to have turned things around in the second set, cutting out the errors and establishing a seemingly-decisive lead.

But nerves were evident as Vekic pulled back from 4-1 to 4-3 and Konta was broken to love attempting to serve out the set. She then missed more chances for another break, her forehand breaking down completely, before Vekic broke again to claim victory.

Camila Giorgi came from a break down in the final set to beat defending champion and top seed Caroline Wozniacki.

Trailing 2-0 in the decider, unseeded Italian Giorgi broke back immediately and won six of the last eight games to win 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

Seventh seeded Australian Ashleigh Barty was beaten 6-4, 6-2 by former world No 1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and Czech Barbora Strycova beat Anett Kontaveit of Estonia 7-6 (7/5), 3-6, 7-5.

At the Korea Open in Seoul, 2013 winner Agnieszka Radwanska bowed out in the last 16 to seventh seed Irina-camelia Begu 6-4, 6-3. Second seed Kiki Bertens got past Dalila Jakupovic of Slovenia 6-4, 7-5 and Mandy Minella beat Priscilla Hon 6-3, 6-4.
