Mcinnes raps Doncaster for ‘lack of vision’ on VAR

- By ANGUS WRIGHT

Aberdeen manager Derek Mcinnes has accused Neil Doncaster of lacking ambition following his dismissal of calls for video technology.

Aberdeen and Motherwell have both called for the introduction of video assistant referees (VAR) to be considered in the past week.

However, SPFL chief executive Doncaster stated that VAR could cost £1 million a season and claimed it was unlikely to eliminate controversy.

Mcinnes said: “The cost thing was always going to be an issue. I get that. But it’s almost as if he’s saying there’s a cost there, we can’t do it.

“But he was also trying to raise aspersions that it’s not always right anyway, which I found a poor, poor reason for not trying to better the whole situation. You ask any referee, they would all be in favour.

“We might be able to get a sponsor to help us, but surely we should be on the front foot and trying to find a way rather than just dismissing it?

“Don’t be one of the countries that’s sitting back and saying, ‘Let’s see what that country does, let’s see what that country does and see how it progresses there’. Why not be one of the countries that are trying to do it?

“Because we’ll get left behind. It’s important we try to find a way and not just say we can’t do it because it costs too much money. That for me is an easy get-out and I think we should be far more ambitious, far more professional and try to find ways of doing it.

“Iwassodisappointedthatit was almost like a get-out, the fact we are not looking into it.

“Our referees will get left behind in Europe and at big tournaments if they’re not operating in leagues with VAR.”
