Still Alice

- Joyce Mcmillan

“Funny, sad and furious,” are the words Scottish actress Sharon Small uses to describe this new play based on Lisa Genova’s 2007 novel, in which she plays Alice Howarth, an academic diagnosed at 50 with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Already a film starring Julianne Moore, Genova’s story aims to reflect the reality of Alzheimer’s while retaining a sense of humour and hope; and its double narrative structure – featuring both Alice’s story and the reflections of her inner voice – emerges strongly in this much-praised stage version, created for Leeds Playhouse by Christine Mary Dunford, and now on a Uk-wide tour. King’s Theatre, Edinburgh, 25-29 September, 0131-529 6000 and Theatre Royal, Glasgow, 13-17 November, 0844 871 7615
