One of Labour’s most senior party officials has apologised after being accused of making anticatholic comments during a televised session at the party’s conference in front of hundreds of delegates.andy Kerr, the chairman of the Labour National Executive Committee, joked that a woman selected to address the conference in Liverpool should not have been called because she crossed herself.

@toryboypierce said: “Cheap anti-catholic joke by Andy Kerr, chairman of Labour NEC, will go down like lead balloon in the fiercely Catholic parts of Scotland which are already unsure of @jeremycorbyn.”

@frlydensmith added: “A casual gratuitous anticatholic insult from the chair of Labour Party conference. If that’s what he says on stage, what does he say behind closed doors? Andy Kerr, an apology is required. #Labourconference.”

@Hullbhoy stated: “Seriously considering ending my Labour Party membership today after the anti-catholic comments by Labour NEC Chair Andy Kerr. We just cannot have bigots like this at the heart of the party. This used to be a political party for all. ” @squinteratn added: “Nicola Sturgeon rightly describes Andy Kerr’s outburst at Labour conference as “unacceptable”. As for her next sentence (“Catholic community is an integral and valued part of Scottish life.”), it’s utterly unacceptable that a senior figure should have to say that in the year 2018” @gwpurnell joked: “Catholic voter: ‘Labour ... hmm! Should I put my cross there? ... watches Andy Kerr video ... ‘In that case I might not’.”

#PRETAMANGER

A teenage girl with a severe allergy to sesame died after eating a Pret a Manger baguette which did not list its ingredients, an inquest will hear.

@joswinson, MP for East Dunbartonshire, posted: “Heart-breaking story. Hope the inquest will find answers & recommend improvements to support people with allergies. As a general rule, producers pls don’t put key allergens in foods where there’s no label & it’s not obvious.” @emarshallexeter added: “This is a tragic story that shows there is still a lot of work to be done on #allergy awareness. All foods should be clearly marked with any allergens, even if freshly prepared.”
