Derby joy as United exit in shootout

-

Jose Mourinho was given a bloody nose by his former midfielder, Frank Lampard, as Derby deservedly sent ten-man Manchester United crashing out of the Carabao Cup on penalties.

Derby looked to have secured victory inside 90 minutes after substitute Jack Marriott followed up the exceptional Harry Wilson free-kick that cancelled out Juan Mata’s early goal, only for Marouane Fellaini to direct home deep into stoppage time to snatch a 2-2 draw.

But former Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson proved the Sky Bet Championship side’s shootout hero, saving Phil Jones’ attempt and securing an 8-7 triumph at a stunned Old Trafford.

Jamie Allen’s late goal took Burton into the fourth round for the first time in their history as the League One side came from behind to defeat Burnley 2-1 at the Pirelli Stadium.

Phil Foden enjoyed a fine evening for Manchester City as the Carabao Cup holders eased into the fourth round with a 3-0 victory at Oxford. The England Under-19 international was involved in the opening two goals, scored by Gabriel Jesus and Riyad Mahrez, before sealing a 3-0 win with his first senior goal.

Substitute Callum Wilson headed a dramatic injury-time winner as Bournemouth scraped into the fourth round with a 3-2 win over Sky Bet Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend scored twice to help secure a 3-0 win against West Brom at The Hawthorns. Patrick van Aanholt was Palace’s other scorer.
