Jeremy Corbyn gave a speech to the Labour conference in Liverpool yesterday, telling activists he expects the party to be in Government within a year.

@Jrmaidment reported: “Jeremy Corbyn really does hate the UK media, telling #Lab18: ‘Here a free press has far too often meant freedom to spread lies and half-truths, and to smear the powerless, not take on the powerful. You challenge their propaganda of privilege by using... social media’.”

@Janemerrick123 said: “Corbyn lecturing the British press about ‘failing to take on the powerful’ when he’s appeared on Press TV and Russia Today is a bit bloody rich.”

@Sebastianepayne said: “That was Corbyn’s best speech to date. Intellectually v coherent, speaking directly to Britain’s desire for change. Full of conciliatory language to party and beyond. Scant on details + business reality. A real challenge and wake up call to the Tories next week.”

@Ayocaesar said: “Jeremy Corbyn looking impassioned, authentic and downright prime ministerial in his #Lab18 conference speech. This is a social movement poised to take state power. It’s on, dingbats.” @Kaijday wrote: “I’m not a huge Jeremy Corbyn fan, but his conference speech today was fantastic. Massive improvement on previous years.”

An emotional episode of The Great British Bake Off on Tuesday saw the show bid farewell to Terry, who was voted out of the contest. He revealed after being removed that he used baking to help him get through tough times following the death of his wife.

@Lewtbrown said: “Genuinely heartbreaking listening to Terry talk about Bake Off helping him with the loss of his wife – we love you Terry. Always will.”

@Schnauzerdroids posted: “Terry may not have won Bake Off, but he won the nation’s hearts.”

@Amevs5 added: “Totally caught on the back foot with an ache at the back of my throat at the end of the exit interviews last night and my heart was stolen. Guess it goes to show it’s more than just a baking competition.”

@Lilypebbles summarised: “I love everything about Bake Off... apart from Paul Hollywood. And I can’t stand how important he thinks his handshakes are. Stop. Right, back to my Rahul fan club.”
