Europe 17½, USA 10½... how the Sunday singles unfolded
14:37pm Rory Mcilroy lost to Justin Thomas by one hole
Mcilroy lost the first to a Thomas birdie but won the next three holes with a birdie and two pars. Thomas birdied the eighth and tenth to get back on level terms. Still all square on the 18th, Thomas hit a great tee shot and Mcilroy’s plugged in the face of a fairway bunker. Mcilroy was unable to escape at the first attempt, found water with his third shot and eventually conceded on the fairway.
14:52 Paul Casey halved with Brooks Koepka
Casey made a nightmare start when his approach to the first plugged in a bunker and he fired his next shot into the water, but he holed a long birdie putt on the next and a tight contest never had more than one hole in it. Koepka birdied the 12th and 13th to lead by one with two to play, but Casey produced a superb birdie on the 17th and almost managed another on the last to snatch victory.
14:53 Justin Rose lost to Webb Simpson 3&2
Rose, who came into the tournament in such fine form, looked rattled when asked to hole a short putt on the second and duly missed it, and the world No 2 gifted Simpson the seventh and eighth to fall three down. The Englishman won the 13th to briefly threaten a comeback but made a mess of the 15th and his birdie on the 16th was calmly matched by Simpson to seal the win.
F
leetwood, so good on Friday and Saturday, started badly by chipping out of a bunker into water at the first and also lost the second. He did recover to take the next two and return to all-square but it did not spark a charge. He missed short-range putts at the fifth and sixth, allowing Finau to regain control and the American took full advantage as he won five in succession to set up victory.
O
lesen was left out of Saturday’s action after an opening loss alongside Mcilroy but proved his credentials in wonderful fashion with four birdies in the first nine holes to storm into a five-hole lead against Spieth. Olesen’s only mistake on the tenth gave Spieth a glimmer of hope, but a birdie on the 14th sealed a tremendous win and settled some European nerves.
W
oods wiped out a two-hole deficit with an eagle on the ninth and birdie on the 12th, but promptly bogeyed the next two holes. Rahm’s three-putt on the 16th gave Woods a lifeline but the Spaniard shut the door in emphatic fashion with a birdie on the 17th after a 356-yard drive and approach shot to three feet. It rounded off a really miserable three days for Tiger.
