Molinari seals it for Les Bleus as Europe win singles 7½-4½

15:55 Ian Poulter beat Dustin Johnson 2up

Poulter took the early initiative in a seesaw contest as Johnson found water at the second, and the Englishman also took the fourth to go two up. Johnson won the fifth and sixth but Poulter took the seventh. Johnson twice holed outrageous putts to keep his hopes alive and Poulter missed one on 17 to win. But Poulter wasn’t asked to putt on 18 after Johnson failed with a long birdie attempt.

15:59 Francesco Molinari beat Phil Mickelson 4&2...Europe win the Ryder Cup

Victory was only briefly in doubt for Molinari against an off-form Mickelson. The Italian raced into a three-hole lead and although he made a mess of the ninth and Mickelson birdied the 11th, Molinari’s relentless accuracy paid off and Mickelson conceded when his tee shot found the water on the 16th. It sparked delirium in the galleries as the point confirmed Europe had won back the Ryder Cup.

16:06 Henrik Stenson beat Bubba Watson 5&4

Stenson ran away with this one. The 2016 Open winner at Royal Troon birdied three holes in a row from the third to take command and another birdie on the 11th put the result beyond doubt. Watson, who won just one hole, bogeyed the 12th to leave Stenson on the verge of victory and the triumph was secured with a birdie on the 14th as the celebrations began in earnest.

G

arcia had been a debatable wild card pick but fully justified his selection with a third win of the week to become the top points scorer in the event’s history. Garcia always held the upper hand after winning the first two holes, but Fowler kept fighting and chipped in on the 13th to get back to one down. However, Fowler also found water off the tee on the 16th and Garcia secured an historic win.

H

atton had enjoyed his first Ryder Cup win alongside Paul Casey on Saturday but yesterday was unable to get the better of Masters champion Reed, who had lost two matches alongside Tiger Woods but registered his first point of the week thanks to five birdies (at the fifth, seventh, ninth, 11th and 16th). Hatton managed a couple of birdies himself on 6 and 13 but they were the only holes he won.

N

oren, the reigning French Open champion, recovered from an early two-hole deficit and took the lead with an eagle on the par-five 14th. Both players bogeyed the 16th hole as the match continued even though the overall result had been decided, and Noren sealed the win in style with a birdie from 30 feet on the last after Dechambeau’s putt had already been conceded.
