The Scottish Government will stage a country-wide consultation on whether local authorities should have the power to impose a bed tax on visitors, Nicola Sturgeon has revealed.

Yet another “nationwide consultation”, the results of which will probably never be revealed, with the idea of a tourist tax being kicked into the long grass after a period of time. She has a bit of a track record for this sort of responsibility-ducking.

So it is we, the Scottish people, who will have to pay through our taxes if she does kick it into the long grass. I really can’t see what the objection to it is. It is a model widely used by other European cities such as Barcelona, Berlin, Amsterdam and Venice. Is there evidence to show that it has affected their tourism negatively? As someone who has travelled to all of those places, I would venture to suggest it hasn’t.
