Unbeaten run continues for Merchiston and Watson’s

Merchiston and George Watson’s College maintained their unbeaten records in the top tier Colt Conference at under-18 level after achieving respective away wins over Strathalla­n and Edinburgh Academy on Saturday.

At Forgandenn­y, Merchiston made their visit to Perthshire a productive journey by claiming a 52-19 win over last season’s Cup winners, Strathalla­n, with a powerful performanc­e that resulted in an eighttry tally for the Colinton school.

Rory Stewart Cox scored a hat-trick of tries and there was a brace each for Matthew Currie and Finlay -Broch Mccallum, the other touchdown coming from Lachlan Gaddie. Rory Thain kicked six conversion­s. Strathalla­n skipper Greg Clunas (2) and wing Dom Ryan scored their side’s tries.

At Newfield, tries by wing Ryan Daley (2), stand-off Alex Harley, No 8 Ewan Henderson and lock Andrew Hogarth helped Watson’s to a 31-7 win over an Edinburgh Academy side that gained its points from a penalty try.

In the other Colt Conference under-18 game, Dollar achieved a 50-34 home win over Stewart’smelville College from a brace each by Michael Gray and Ross Mcknight and single scores from Danny Robins, Calum Busby, Rob Alexander and Finn Mcilwraith.

Meanwhile, round three of the Schools Cup continues today with Dunbar Grammar School facing Marr College and Morrison’s taking on Merchiston. Tomorrow Glasgow Academy and Edinburgh Academy meet at New Anniesland.

Last week’s round three matches resulted in wins for North Berwick High School, Glenalmond College, Stewart’s-melville College, St Aloysius College and Strathalla­n.

The pick of the Cup matches last week was the under-16 match between Earlston High School and Hawick High School. At the end of high quality game it was Hawick who edged through to the next round with a 29-24 win.
