New coach guides Scots to series victory

- By CRAIG MADDEN

Jen Wilson, Scotland women’s new head coach, made a winning start to her career with a victory over Wales in the twotest match series in Cardiff, despite only drawing the last encounter 1-1 yesterday.

The former South African triple Olympian made ten changes to the side that won the opening encounter 2-1, and watched her side concede a goal from a penalty corner in the first quarter. The Scots immediately retaliated and were unlucky when Fiona Burnet’s effort hit the post.

Wilson’s charges had the majority of chances and were unfortunate when they were denied a penalty and then had the ball in the net but the umpire had already blown for a set piece. With eight minutes remaining, the Scots gambled by replacing their keeper with an additional outfield player.

And they were finally rewarded with only 30 seconds left with a scrambled equaliser by captain Kaz Cuthbert for a well-earned share of the spoils.

Wilson said: “A draw was actually an unlucky result when you compare the stats and see how much we created throughout the game, let alone how well we performed.”
