Protest clash: Indian police use water cannon on farmers marching towards New Dehli
Indian police used water cannons to disperse farmers who were marching to the capital after stopping them at New Delhi’s border with neighboring Uttar Pradesh state. The farmers have been pressing for waiver of farm loans amid other demands. Rain-dependent agriculture employs more than half of India’s 1.3 billion population, but shrinking earnings mean it now accounts for only 15 per cent of the subcontinent’s economy. Officers are also reported to have fired tear gas shells at the crowd as dozens of protests continued throughout the streets of New Dehli yesterday afternoon.
