Bridge removal could shut rail line at major cost
The demolition of a bridge could force the possible emergency closure of the East Coast Main Line at a cost of up to £3 million a day to Aberdeenshire Council.
The Abbeyton road-overrail bridge was shut in July.
Inspections found serious failings in the 170-yearold structure, which is situated on the B966 just north of Fordoun,
The local council said an emergency closure of the East Coast rail route to demolish the bridge could cost £1m to £3m a day.
The demolition is expected to cost the authority about £1m.
