Sturgeon warns over axed heart drug trial

- By SCOTT MACNAB

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has warned that the cancellation of a drugs trial over Brexit concerns could be a “sign” of things to come.

The drug dutogliptin was due to be tested on patients at the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank, as well as at hospitals in Leeds and Exeter.

But the trial was halted this week by research firm Recardio amid concerns over how new medicines will be approved after departure from the EU.

Ms Sturgeon said it was an example of the “real damage to this country” being done by Brexit.

“It is incredibly serious,” the First Minister told MSPS.

“The Golden Jubilee hospital is particularly active in the field of cardiovascular research.”

Ministers have invested a further £431,000 this year to continue the research work undertaken at the hospital, Ms Sturgeon added.

“This is the first clinical study we’re aware of to be suspended in Scotland as a result of Brexit – that is deeply concerning and a real sign of what could happen down the line.”
