World Championship woe energises Mcwatt
Stuart Mcwatt says his early exit at last month’s world judo championships means he is gunning for redemption at this weekend’s European Open in Glasgow.
The two-day Emirates Arena showpiece offers the 21-year-old Scot a chance to work out his frustrations from Baku, where he lost in the first round of the 81kg event to the eventual bronze medallist Alexander Wieczerzak of Germany.
Mcwatt said: “There was disappointment. I had a few chances to win that fight but I thought I fought relatively well. I expected myself to reach the later rounds but there are no easy rounds at the world championships. But I feel that hunger and drive to better myself.”
Fellow Scot Malin Wilson goes for 57kg gold – and Olympic qualifying points – in Glasgow, fresh from winning last month’s European Cup in Bratislava.
