Brushes with War: Art from the Front Line
A unique exhibition of drawings and paintings by serving soldiers in the First World War arrives in Glasgow in time for the 100th anniversary of the Armistice. The 203 works of art, loaned by an American collector, with a further 16 from the museum’s own collection, capture aspects of war not seen in propaganda or even official war art. This is the squaddies’ perspective, huddled in a trench or trekking through no man’s land, portraits of friends and sweethearts, whatever it took to pass the dull hours of war when nothing much was happening.
