Boroughmuir make it six out of six as Mcconnell grabs two tries in comfortable victory

- By ALAN LORMIER

Boroughmuir reached the halfway stage in the Shogun Under-18 conference with a perfect record of six wins from six rounds after achieving a 29-0victoryoverayr/wellington at Meggetland.

In what head coach Scott Anderson described as “a very competitive and physical match” Boroughmuir showed composure in both attack and defence.

Anderson added: “Our structure in attack meant it gave us a number of chances to score tries and our defence throughout the game was much improved this week, which made it difficult for Ayr to break us down.

“We are now looking ahead to our next game away to Stirling County.”

Boroughmuir’s victory over Ayr came from a five-try tally from second row Derry Mcconnell (2), hooker Grant Stevenson, back row Paul Bogie and scrum-half Ethan Mcvicker. Stand-off Calum Anderson kicked two conversions.

The Meggetland club also enjoyed successes at other age levels, with their under16s winning 29-7, the under15s recording a 50-0 victory and the under-14s securing a 25-0 victory.

In the other Shogun under-18 matches Highland had to stage a late show to force a 34-34 draw with Hamilton after trailing 29-5 to the Lanarkshire club, while at Burnbrae Stirling County were too strong for West of Scotland, the Bridgehaugh men winning 50-0.

Schools rugby has gone on the back burner this month as half-term holidays of differing lengths and dates make scheduling fixtures a fraught task. One delayed L200 Conference game, however, went ahead and resulted in a 51-0 win for Heriot’s over Kelvinside Academy, wing Patrick Miller and centre Angus Mcleod each scoring a brace of tries.

Heriot’s also had a good Under-16 Cup win over Stewart’s-melville last week and are looking to extend their run when they face Fettes today.

Stewart’s-melville enjoyed a happier experience in the Under-18 Cup, beating Glasgow Academy 45-0 and today they play St Aloysius, winners over Earlston High School in the previous round.

Also in good form in that tournament were Edinburgh Academy, who had a 78-0 victory against Glasgow Academy, and George Watson’s, 70-0 winners against Glasgow High School.

Elsewhere, there were substantial wins for Merchiston over Morrison’s and for Loretto against Lomond.
