Davies rolling back the years with second senior major win in Indiana

- By LORNA CARMICHAEL

Laura Davies claimed her second women’s senior major title of the 2018 season with a wire-to-wire victory at the Senior LPGA Championship.

Davies defied winds gusting up to 25mph at French Link in Indiana to card a final round of 70 and finish eightunder-par, four shots clear of Helen Alfredsson and Silvia Cavalleri.

“This is fantastic,” Davies said. “Winning the US Senior Women’s Open was a real thrill and this is a golf course that I didn’t think I could win on. So, for me, this is a real victory.

“I’ve always played okay around here, but I’ve never strung three rounds together. I’ve always had one big number so this is nice.”

The victory means Davies has won both senior women’s majors on the schedule. “I wish there were more of them to play,” the 55-year-old added.

Catriona Matthew, the 2019 Solheim Cup captain, finished joint-seventh in an event that also featured one of her vicecaptains, Kathryn Imrie.

On the LET, Kelsey Macdonald carded a 71 to lie five shots off the lead after the opening round of the Hero Women’s Indian Open.

Norway’s Tonje Daffinrud shot a six-under-par 66 to set the pace, recording seven birdies and a single bogey on the Gary Player Course at DLF Golf and Country Club.

On the LPGA, England’s Bronte Law was three shots off the lead after the opening round of the inaugural Buick LPGA Shanghai.

Law carded three birdies and 15 pars in a three-underpar 69 at Qizhong Garden Golf Club, where world No 2 Ariya Jutanugarn set the pace on six under after a flawless 66.
