More ‘Brexit diplomacy’ as Dutch royals make their first UK state visit
Ministers will seek to promote Britain’s post-brexit future as the king and queen of the Netherlands make their first UK state visit.
King Willem-alexander and Queen Maxima arrive tomorrow for a two-day visit which includes staying at Buckingham Palace and meeting Prime Minister Theresa May in Downing Street on Wednesday.
A Mansion House event celebrating the work of the two countries on technology and other projects is scheduled, while defence matters take centre stage via a trip to HMS 0 Queen Maxima will arrive tomorrow for a state visit
Belfast and the visiting Dutch Offshore Patrol Vessel, HNLMS Zeeland.
Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt will also meet his Dutch counterpart, Stef Blok.
The trip follows a pat- tern which has been dubbed “Brexit diplomacy” where either members of the British royal family visit EU countries or their heads of state travel to the UK, in an apparent bid to strengthen national friendships as the UK leaves the EU.
Mr Hunt said: “The UK and The Netherlands have a rich, long history between our people and of course our royal families.
“So it is a pleasure to welcome His Majesty King Willem-alexander and Queen Maxima to the United Kingdom, reflecting our enduring commitment to this partnership. Together we work to further peace and security across the globe.”
