Chica is Aintree bound

● Dalgleish filly makes her mark at Musselburgh

- By GORDON BROWN

Chicabuena earned herself a trip to Aintree after scoring on the opening card of Musselburgh’s autumn jumps campaign yesterday.

The Keith Dalgleish-trained filly, sent off 11-10 favourite, quickened up nicely for Brian Hughes to beat Golden Jeffrey by a length and a quarter in the Trial Racing UK For Free Now Handicap Hurdle.

Winning owner Richard Gilbert said: “The plan now is to go to Aintree on 9 December for a three-year-old fillies Listed hurdle. She showed a nice turn of foot out there and Brian was always confident despite it not looking that way from the stands.”

Edinburgh owner Gerry Mcgladery saw his colours carried to victory by Needs To Be Seen who provided Alain Cawley with his first winner at the East Lothian venue.

The 7-2 chance finished third at Huntingdon on Sunday and winning trainer John Ryan said: “I said he’ll be OK when he strengthens up and Gerry said he’s got three days as he’s running at Musselburgh on Wednesday. He used to be with Joseph O’brien and he’ll be even better on softer ground as he’s a big horse.”

Mcgladery completed a 19-1 double when Lucinda Russelltrained Island Heights shouldered top weight to victory in the Leuchie House Handicap Hurdle under Derek Fox.

There were four Scottishtrained winners on an allhurdle programme as Iain Jardine’s Dizoard and Jim Goldie’s Rioja Day both landed big gambles in the first and last races respectively.

Meanwhile, things have not gone entirely smoothly since Moon Racer took the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham in 2015 but he has plenty of ability and looks the one to be on in the Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle at Newbury this afternoon.

The David Pipe-trained nineyear-old has been restricted to just eight starts since his famous win but demonstrated his talent by winning on his latest outing at Ayr in April.

He can carry on from where he left off in the spring at decent odds.
