LEAGUE CUP FINAL CLASHES

-

Aberdeen 2 Celtic 1, 1976

Willie Miller lifted 12 trophies as Aberdeen skipper and this was where it started for the Pittodrie stalwart. Celtic would go on to win a league and Scottish Cup double but it was Ally Macleod’s Dons who wrecked their treble bid with their extra-time victory. Kenny Dalglish gave Celtic the lead when he converted an early penalty but Drew Jarvie’s 25thminute equaliser sent the game to extra-time, where Davie Robb’s winner, pictured above, ensured the trophy was heading back to the Granite City.

Celtic 2 Aberdeen 0, 2000

Dalglish made his return to Celtic in 1999 as one half of the so-called ‘Dream Team’. He was given the role of director of football while his former Liverpool team-mate John Barnes was unveiled as the new Parkhead manager. But the humiliating Scottish Cup exit to Inverness soon saw Barnes return south as Dalglish was forced to pick up the pieces. It proved to be an unhappy marriage but this victory – sealed by goals from Vidar Riseth and Tommy Johnson, below left, – over Ebbe Skovdahl’s Reds was the one highlight of his brief stint as interim boss.

Celtic 3 Aberdeen 0, 2016

Celtic lifted their 100th major honour as they swept Derek Mcinnes’ team aside and kicked off what has become one of the most dominant periods in the club’s proud history. Brendan Rodgers’ arrival five months before had breathed fresh life into a squad who were in danger of running out of steam under Ronny Deila. The Northern Irishman would go on to claim all three domestic trophies during a campaign in which no Scottish rival were able to defeat them. Rodgers’ first piece of silverware was claimed in imperious style as first-half strikes from Tom Rogic and James Forrest were followed up by a Moussa Dembele spot-kick, above, after the break. The result of this one never looked in doubt.
