#TOURISTTAX

Edinburgh councillors have backed plans to introduce a £2 tourist tax in the Capital. The city council will submit proposals to the Scottish Government to charge the new rate and ask that the funding is additional to any budget cuts from Holyrood.

@kezdugdale tweeted: “Delighted to see @Edinburgh_cc formally vote to introduce a tourist tax today of £2 a night for a max of 7 nights. It’ll generate vital funds to help keep our great city at the forefront of world-leading tourist destinations.”

@Politicalyeti said: “Why the need, though? I’m not against it in principle, get tourist taxes in other places. But surely there’s enough folk with enough money in Edinburgh that there’s no need to make tourists pay?”

@apmcfadyen added: “All in favour of this, although I would pay £2 a night NOT to stay in Edinburgh.”

@Garethjf wrote: “I’ve paid tourist taxes in plenty of other places and I really don’t mind. I don’t think most tourists will either. Is paying £67 instead of £65 really going to change someone’s mind about coming?”

But @Rangersheart fumed: “Tourist tax? Everything you buy in Edinburgh is more expensive than everywhere else, has been for years. Rip-off city.”

#ROAMING

Britons travelling in Europe could face a return to mobile roaming charges in the event of a no-deal Brexit, according to Government documents.

@mark_pettt wrote: “We can write about this on the back page of our blue passports as a reminder.”

@Simonmdlord added: “Post-brexit we will all be much poorer so foreign holidays will only be for rich hedge-fund owners like Rees-mogg.”

@Wilhadden said: “It’s a pain, but for most it’s by far not the worst element of Brexit, especially as free Wifi is ubiquitous.”

@Olanmcgowan quipped: “Bloody unelected EU bureaucrats, coming over here, banning roaming charges, protecting consumers. Who do they think they are. Thankfully, the UK can now take back control. And promptly hand it over to unelected corporate executives.”

@Stephen69054196 was unconvinced: “Absolutely pathetic from the EU. I voted to leave the EU for the UK to take back control of our laws and borders. I don’t care about roaming charges!”
