IAN ROSS DIES, AGED 72
Former Liverpool and Aston Villa defender Ian Ross has died at the age of 72.
Glasgow-born Ross moved south to sign for Anfield manager Bill Shankly in 1963 at the age of 16. Three years later, he made his senior debut and went on to make 69 appearances, scoring four goals. His most famous performance for the Reds came in a European Fairs Cup match against German club Bayern Munich when he snuffed out Franz Beckenauer and scored in the 1-1 draw between the sides. In 1972, Ross, pictured, moved to Aston Villa for £60,000 and became captain, helping them win successive promotions, latterly into the old First Division. He lifted the League Cup in 1975 after a 1-0 victory over Norwich in the Wembley final. Following spells with Notts County, Northampton, Peterborough and Hereford, he also managed Valur and Keflavik in Norway before returning to Scotland to take the reins at Berwick Rangers.
