Winds win at Gayfield

-

Leaders Arbroath were unable to put further distance between themselves and title rivals Raith Rovers after their game with Stranraer at Gayfield was abandoned after 11 minutes due to high winds.

After two inspections referee Craig Napier opted to give the game the go-ahead, however when a goal kick from Red Lichties shot-stopper Darren Jamieson had gone out for a corner he consulted both managers and called it off.

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell said it was the “right decision”, while Stranraer boss Stevie Farrell agreed it was the “sensible option”.

Forfar moved level with Raith thanks to a 2-0 success over Airdrie at Station Park, with new signing Gary Irvine marking his debut by crashing a wind-assisted shot from 40 yards high over David Hutton shortly before the break.

The points were secured 18 minutes from time when leftback Adam Eckersley charged up the pitch and collected a pass from Dylan Easton and shot home via the far post.

Stenhousemuir climbed off bottom spot thanks to a 1-0 win over Montrose, with idle Dumbarton now propping up the table. The Warriors introduced ex-st Johnstone striker Greg Hurst on 61 minutes and seven minutes later the substitute beat Gable Endies goalkeeper Allan Fleming at his near post with an angled drive.
