Scotland among top seeds for Euro draw as Kerr targets treble feat

- By ALAN CAMPBELL

Scotland head coach Shelley Kerr says reaching a third successive major championship finals is her side’s target, regardless of the outcome of today’s Euro 2021 draw in Nyon.

For the first time, Scotland are among the nine top seeds, with all the group winners qualifying for the finals in England. The three best runners-up will also go through, while the other six will face head-to-head play-offs for the three remaining places.

“The draw has almost gone under the radar because of the success of getting to the World Cup,” Kerr, who will be in Nyon, said.

“It’s fantastic we’re in the first pot, but you can rest assured that all the teams in Pot 2 will want to draw Scotland. They’ll think we’re the weakest team among the top seeds.”

Athough Scotland cannot be drawn against the very top European nations, including Germany, France and holders Netherlands, Pot 2 has many formidable sides. They include Euro 2017 finalists Denmark, who have a higher Fifa ranking than Scotland, while Portugal, Poland and the Republic of Ireland are among the third seeds. Poland were the third seeds in Scotland’s World Cup qualifying group and arguably gave Kerr’s side bigger problems than top-ranked Switzerland.

“We’ve raised expectations because of the successes of recent years and, before the draw has even taken place, our target will be to qualify for the finals of another tournament,” the Scotland head coach added.

0 Shelley Kerr: Aiming high.
