All right, Jack?

-

Former First Minister Lord Jack Mcconnell said abolishing the House of Lords and replacing it with an elected Senate should not be done just to “help save the union” or to replace the EU.

Labour peer Lord Jack Mcconnell defends the House of Lords. Yup, makes total sense.

Portrait In the list of priorities for premises to be shut we have Holyrood at the top. Let’s start with that and see how we get on.

I know you know

There is a perfectly good model in use in the Lords which should be used as the basis of reform. The Church of England Bishops: they are elected by their membership; apolitical; retire at 70 and lose the right to use the titles.

Replace the Hofl with a Senate filled by those who have reached the top of their chosen occupation (other than politicians), elected by their peers (not by the general public) and there for two terms before fresh blood is elected in. 500 people from 500 occupations to ensure a good spread of talent, class, experience, education, etc. This is one way to get the services of very good people who otherwise wouldn’t touch politics but who have an enormous amount to offer the nation in retirement.

It won’t happen until the generations who still just think in terms of Us and Them shuffle off their mortal coil. RUK is still incapable of thinking in terms of overall fairness. It’s still about might and dominance for many, with no concept of greater good and longterm thinking.

Dunnomuch

Shut it down , full of irrelevant old men with outdated opinions.
