Nicola Sturgeon had a pop at the Scottish Labour leader at a typically rowdy First Minister’s Questions yesterday. She said: “I want the powers in this parliament to tackle child poverty. I’m not sure what it says about Richard Leonard’s priorities that he wants to leave those powers in the hands of the Tories.”

@Mballantynemsp said: “How can @Nicolasturgeon ask for further devolution of welfare when she relies on the DWP to administer many of the current devolved benefits. The SNP’S hypocrisy knows no bounds.”

@Leonardforfm wrote: “@Labourrichard ‘When it comes to a choice between protecting the poor and protecting your party – you choose your party every time First Minister ’.”

@Bbcphilipsim added: “Nicola Sturgeon challenges Richard Leonard to back SNP calls for more welfare powers to be devolved to Holyrood; ‘given your track record, you’d probably hand those powers back,’ he replies.”

@jamiegeeneuk said: “I accept that there’s more we can do” says @Nicolasturgeon on education. Why then is she pushing for #indyref2 during the lifetime of this parliament? How about putting right the wrongs of a decade in power. Education or independence? Choose your priority First Minister!”

Meanwhile, the flightless birds from cold regions were proving popular.

@britishmuseum wrote: “‘One can’t be angry when one looks at a Penguin’. In 1860, English art critic John Ruskin wrote a letter saying he often visited the Museum to look at penguins to cure his states ‘of disgust and fury’.”

@cuddleearth added: “Our planet needs to continue to fight to protect the lives and habitats of our precious wildlife – we can all be the change.” Alongside a stirring picture,

@jamesmelville wrote: “When in Antartica, serenade a penguin with bagpipes. Heroically magnificent.”

@emmareynolds161 tweeted a cute diagram of penguin varieties and made an appeal: “This day makes me so happy. I love these little guys but unfortunately many of them are threatened by environmental factors and because of our activity in their habitats. It would be sad to see any of these penguins become extinct.”
