Robertson named in PFA Team of the Year for Premier League

- 0 Scotland captain Andrew Robertson has been in dazzling form for Liverpool as the Reds battle Manchester City for the title.

Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson has become the first Scot since Darren Fletcher to be named in the PFA Team of the Year for the Premier League, writes Alan Temple.

The 25-year-old was handed the accolade by his fellow professionals as he enjoys another dazzling campaign with the Reds, notching 11 assists and shining in their title challenge and run to the Champions League semifinal.

Robertson was joined by Anfield team-mates Trent Alexander-arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane in the star-studded line-up.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp commented: “It is fully deserved. From my point of view, my team is the team of the season. We could have had six or seven more players involved because they have played an outstanding season in so many moments.

“It’s even more special when you are in the team of the year as a defender, because that is coming from the players who have been up against them and have obviously found it uncomfortable and thought ‘oh, that was not easy today!’ ”

Scotland captain Robertson follows in the footsteps of former Manchester United midfielder Fletcher, who was named in the 2009-10 vintage after helping the Red Devils to a League Cup win and a runners-up position in the league.

Meanwhile, Klopp said he was not surprised to see title rivals Manchester City triumph 2-0 in the midweek Manchester derby – their game in hand – and move a point ahead of Liverpool with three matches left to play. “I watched it and I was completely calm,” said Klopp ahead of tonight’s clash with Huddersfield at Anfield.

“It was the result I expected. United tried whatever they can, in the first half especially, but over 95 minutes it was clear they can’t stand up to City at the moment. I was not surprised by the result.

“Finally this game was played. For months there was always one game in hand. Now it’s clear, we are one point behind City and if we win our next two games, then it will be decided on the last game. That’s pretty special. It’s like Highlander (the 1986 movie starring Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert); only one of us will be there at the end.”
