Murray: I’m happy, pain-free and enjoying my life

-

Andy Murray has revealed he is pain-free and could return to action in time for a possible appearance at Wimbledon in July.

The two-time Wimbledon champion has not played since the Australian Open and has since undergone a second hip operation. Murray had previously announced he was going to retire but appeared to go back on that decision ahead of his second surgery.

Speaking at the Virgin Money London Marathon, where he fired the starting pistol for the elite men’s race, the US Open and double Olympic champion told BBC1: “There’s no pain any more. I’m happy, pain-free and enjoying my life.

“I’ve been hitting a few balls from a stationary position. I’m still quite a long way from testing it properly, running around a court.

“I just have to see what happens. I don’t feel any pressure that I need to come back, but if my body feels good and I’m pain-free then I’ll give it a go.”

Meanwhile, Dominic Thiem defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-0 to win the Barcelona Open yesterday. The fifth-ranked Austrian cruised to victory for his second title of the year, adding to his triumph in Indian Wells last month.

Thiem defeated Roger Federer in the Indian Wells final, and Rafael Nadal in the Barcelona semi-finals to become the first player other than Novak Djokovic to defeat the Spaniard on clay four times.

Medvedev, coming off a semi-final appearance in Monte Carlo, started well by taking a 2-0 lead in the first set, but the Russian was never in contention again after Thiem broke back a few games later to retake control of a match that lasted just over an hour.

In the doubles final, Britain’s Jamie Murray and Brazilian partner Bruno Soares lost to Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah of Colombia 6-4, 7-6 (4).
