Climate cheek

-

For sheer chutzpah you just have to admire Nicola

Sturgeon on her declaration of a “climate emergency”. Ms Sturgeon has no credibility on this issue as she did not announce an immediate halt to spending £3billion each on the A9 and A96 road schemes.

Nor was there an apology for the £20bn spent by SNP governments on roads and bridges which has resulted in a record number of cars and lorries on Scotland’s roads leading to more pollution,

congestion and ill-health. No mention, either, of the collapse in bus passenger numbers and the many bus routes which have been axed under her government. Or indeed, any mention of the decline in cycling on her watch.

At a time of austerity ms sturgeon’ s SNP government can easily find billions to fund climate changing road schemes, but never has enough money to fill the empty bellies of

Scotland’s hungry adults and children. One thing is certain; road building will continue unabated in Scotland and Ms Sturgeon’s talk of a “climate emergency” will be seen as rhetoric to convince the gullible that the SNP is concerned about climate change.

Re the letters from Charles Wardrop and John Milne (29 April) – we have beautiful walks in our area to take our children and grandchildren to enjoy nature. Our favourite walk is beside a small loch. During the winter months the water level around the loch rose and rose, drowning plants and lapping around tree trunks.

Now, with the spring, the plug has been pulled and the water level has gone down again, leaving a black, muddy, smelly, tide mark. It is a silent spring. No nesting water birds with chicks, no damselflies or frog spawn, no bulrushes and water lilies as so many habitats have been destroyed.

Is this global warming? No, it is introduced beaver escapees with “beaver fever”. Why do we think we can control global warming when we are unable to look after our own backyards?
