Martin Compston looking forward to spoiler-free social media again

Line Of Duty star Martin Compston said he was looking forward to the fifth series coming to an end so he could use social media freely again.

The actor, who plays DS Steve Arnott in the gripping BBC One drama, also hoped fans would not be disappointed by the series finale, teasing “a few big pay-offs”.

Speaking ahead of the finale’s broadcast last night, Comp - ston said: “I’m chuffed with the attention the show’s getting, but one of the reasons I can’t wait for it to be over is because, like, I can put out a tweet saying, ‘Just had a sausage roll on Sunday Brunch’, and I guarantee somebody will tweet me back going ‘Please no spoilers’.”

The popularity of the drama –and it’s big central mystery – meant fans were in uproar after a DVD of series five was seen on sale in a Sainsbur y’s supermarket days before last night’ s finale. A spokesman for Sainsbury’s confirmed the mistake but said it had been removed from shelves

Compston said that he loves “all the mad theories that come in” from fans on Twitter after each episode has aired.

However, he added :“It’ s a shame, because some of them are spot-on, but you can’t like it or favourite it or any thing because you’d give it away, but it’s one of the joys of the show. Everyone loves being an amateur sleuth.”

The police drama ended it’s fifth season last night with a hotly-anticipated 90 -minute episode, and a sixth series has been confirmed by BBC One.

Compston said: “The show has been commissioned for another series, but who knows who’ll make it there.”

The show follows the work of anti-corruption unit AC-12, led by Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar), DS Steve Arnott (Compston) and DI Kate Fleming (Vicky Mcclure).

Compston said: “It’s been a great ride, and I think we got really lucky that we star ted on BBC Two. So, by the time we got to this bigger audience we had our own style and we’ve been allowed to keep it because we don’t make excuses for the audience.”

The current series has been the most-watched programme of 2019 so far.
