Post- truth Ruth?

Bluebell hell

-

They j ust can’t stop t hemselves... the Scottish Conservatives and their leader Ruth Davidson MSP launch their EU election campaign with Scottish Independence and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon firmly on their agenda. But, we must note, no Manifesto launch, only a campaign l aunch! Ms Davidson said a vote f or her part y would “respect the result of referendums” and pledged “to honour the voices of millions of people who told us Scotland should stay in the UK, and that the UK should leave the EU”.

Ms Davidson, why should anyone l i sten to your call? After all, the people of Scot

land were assured by you and your party that if they voted to stay in the UK, their place in the EU would be secure. Let me remind Ms Davidson and her party – Scotland voted to remain in the EU.

I nstead of Ms Davidson accusing Scotland’s First Minister of selfishly using the EU elections to push the case for separation, she should have directed any acquisitions to the PM, who has continued to exclude Scotland’s voice from the negotiation table. CATRIONA C CLARK

Even for seasoned non- Tories, like myself, Ruth Davidson has been a breath of fresh air and honesty, qualities sadly lacking in Scottish politics for many years. She makes the named contenders for the next Tory leader look like double dealing political pygmies in comparison. In Scotland she is our Statue of Liberty.

What a pity for all of us, in every corner of the UK, that she could not be the next Tory leader.

ALEXANDER MCKAY New Cut Rigg, Edinburgh You report that the Woodland Trust is experiencing bluebell woods being damaged by irresponsible visitors ( 15 May). The Trust has some responsibility themselves for this. It is inevitable that where a bluebell wood known only to locals and cherished by them is developed by the Woodland Trust’s addition of a large car park, visitor numbers will increase and irresponsible people will damage what has until then been highly valued. This is predictable, and offering advice to visitors about how to behave is shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.
