- By GORDON BROWN

C h a r l e s K i n g s l e y w a s a n i m p r e s s i v e w i n n e r o f t h e Cadzow Castle Handicap at Hamilton Park yesterday.

Ridden by Joe Fanning and t r a i n e d b y Ma r k Jo h n s t o n , the 2-1 favourite stormed clear from the 2f pole and ended up trouncing Royal Cosmic by four and half lengths.

Fanning said: “He’s handled the ground very well and that was a nice performance. He could be a decent prospect and we’ll see what the handicapper does after this.”

Johnston went on to score with his other two runners on the eight-race card as Rose Of Kildare and Creek Island also won to complete a 32-1 treble for the Middleham trainer.

The former, sent off evens favourite, encountered plenty of trouble in running as she f i n a l l y s aw d ayl i g h t b e f o r e l e a d i n g c l o s e h o m e u n d e r PJ Mcdonald in the BB Food Service Novice Auction Stakes.

“She’s pretty decent and certainly got me out of jail!” the winning jockey exclaimed.

J o h n s t o n k e p t h i s w i f e De i r d re h a p py wh e n C r e e k Island took the Duncan And Kathleen Diamond Wedding Anniversar y, as the the couple featured in the race are his mother and father in law.

I n t o d a y ’s a c t i o n , S t o n e Mason l o o k s u p to t h e t a s k in the second division of the Cumwhinton Maiden Stakes at Carlisle, after finishing third on his racecourse bow at the start of the month.

He found a couple of more ex p e r i e n c e d r iva l s a s h a d e too good at Wetherby, showing plenty before just dropping away in the closing stages.

Stone Mason will surely feel the benefit of that outing, and Roger Charlton has found a nice opportunity here.

Dragon Sun can notch up his hat-trick in the Nicholsons Stalham Engineering Handicap at Yarmouth.

The son of Pivotal failed to make an impact in three juvenile outings last year but, after being gelded and switched to h a n d i c a p c o mp a ny, h e h a s won each of his two starts for Richard Hannon.

He was well supported first time out at Lingfield in March, and managed to run out a cosy length winner despite a slightly troubled passage.

Hiked 7lb in the ratings for that effort, Dragon Sun rolled on to B everley at the end of last month when he looked to have a good chunk in hand as he triumphed by just a neck. A steady early pace that day was probably not in his favour, but the margin of victor y limited the handicapper to just a 4lb rise - and Dragon Sun could still be ahead of the game.

Informed Front is a notable newcomer for John Gosden in the Eastern Power Systems Of Norwich Novice Stakes.

He did not make the track as a juvenile but boasts an excellent pedigree as a son of War Front out of a Breeders’ Cup winner in Informed Decision.

M a k a w e e s t r u c k g o l d a t York on Saturday, and makes a quick return in the Watch Racing TV In Stunning HD Fillies’ Handicap. Saddled with an extra 5lb for that victor y, she steps up to 14 furlongs but trainer David O’meara expects h e r t o i mp r ove a g a i n f o r a longer trip.
