Morgan welcomes the great expectations

-

(India) n Top of the ICC rankings, Bumrah has the wind in his sails. He has just enjoyed another productive Indian Premier League campaign with Mumbai Indians and has emerged as his country’s undisputed attack leader. Genuinely sharp but with a neat line in slower balls and a hard-to-read action, he feasts when defending big totals. n The fire still burns bright within the Jamaican opener, who dispatched England’s bowlers to all parts during their recent one-day series in the Caribbean, to the tune of 424 runs at an average in excess of 100. The 39-year-old announced his intention to retire from ODIS after the World Cup but he has prevaricated since then.

(Australia) n Australia’s one-day side have been in tatters for much of the past two years but they are coming around at the perfect time. In Cummins, they boast a newball battering ram capable of extracting life from flat pitches and striking in clusters. His history of injury suggests he may need to be managed carefully, but, if that part is handled with care, the job of ruffling feathers in big games can safely be left to the 26-year-old Sydneysider. n Indisputably the best batsman in the world at present, Kohli has a strong case to be regarded as the finest of all-time in ODIS. His statistics alone are staggering: 10,843 runs in 227 matches at an average of almost 60, a strike-rate in excess of 90 and just the 41 hundreds. n A key component of Pakistan’s shock victory in the Champions Trophy two years ago, Fakhar has sparkled in brief patches since then but has often flattered to deceive. However, he again showed what he is capable of during the recent ODI series against England. n The opener is back in the fray, alongside Steve Smith, after a year-long suspension for his role in the ball-tampering saga. The English crowds will be quick to remind the belligerent lefthander of his fall from grace but that could spur him on to greater heights. n In a star-studded batting line-up, Buttler could be their most valuable commodity. An average in excess of 40 with a strike-rate approaching 120 paints its own picture, but Buttler, unlike the others on this list, is most effective towards the end of an innings.
