Roger Federer does not need a n y r e m i n d e r s a b o u t h i s advancing years but he will get one anyway when he faces Casp er Ruud in the third round of the French Open.

The 20-year-old Norwegian is the son of former professional Christian Ruud, who was in the draw when Federer made his grand slam debut at Roland Garros 20 years ago.

“I k n o w p r o b a b l y m o r e about his dad than about him,” Federer said of Casper, who c l a i med a n i mpr e s s ive 6 - 4 , 7-5, 6-3 victory over 29th seed Matteo Berrettini to reach the third round of a grand slam for the first time.

“I know that he’s improved a lot in recent years, and I think he plays very well on the clay. But for any 20 -year-old to be on the big stage, playing a top guy, on a centre cour t, that’s what you dream of.”

Casper jnr said: “I think they practised together once, he [dad Christian] told me, but he never played him. So I will be the first Ruud to say I was able to play him.”

Federer, pictured, is yet to drop a set on his return to the Parisian clay but wa s g ive n a s l i g h t l y tougher than expected test by big-serving German Oscar Otte before winning 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

The 37-year-old is happy with how things are going, saying: “I feel really good considering I haven’t played here in that long. Especially if I think back a few weeks and months ago, I didn’t know how successful I was going to play or how I was going to feel on the clay.” R a f a e l N a d a l b e a t Yannick Maden 6 -1, 6-2, 6-4. It was the second successive match i n wh i c h Na d a l h a d faced a German qualifier with the same first name having defeated Yannick Hanfmann in the opening round. Maden detained Nadal for a f e w min u tes a n d o n e g a me longer, with the 11-time champion making somewhat heavy weather of the third set, where his serve was broken twice.

“I t wa s a g o o d m a t c h f o r the first two sets,” said Nadal. “Then, in the third, being honest, I think I lost a little bit of concentration.”

I n t h e n e x t r o u n d N a d a l will face 27th seed David Goffin, who saw off Miomir Kecmanov i c 6 -2 , 6 - 4 , 6 - 3 . “I t i s probably the ultimate challenge,” said Goffin.

Sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsi - pas was given a stern examination by Bolivian Hugo Dellien before coming through 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 7-5.

Grigor Dimitrov has dropped from inside the top five to only just inside the top 50, but he pro duced an impressive 6 -7 (3) 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3 win over 11th seed Marin Cilic.

Ex- champion Stan Wawrinka crushed Chilean Cristian Garin 6-1, 6-4, 6- 0, while seventh seed Kei Nishikori beat h o me f avo u r i te Jo -Wil f r i ed Tsonga 4-6 ,6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
