Winks takes it on the chin and says Spurs will have their day

- By SAM CUNNINGHAM

Harry Winks insists that Tottenham Hotspur can win the Champions League within the next five years.

The midfielder, one of Spurs’ standout players in Madrid, was unperturbed by the defeat to Liverpool and believes they can replicate their opponents, who lost in the final last year to Real Madrid, and learn from their mistakes.

“We are more than capable of [winning the Champions League] and we have shown tonight that we are up there with Europe’ s best,” Winks said. “People say we need to win a trophy and we need to this or that, but what we have achieved is greater than that and it just shows how much the manager has taken this club to a new level.

“Every year in the Champions League we have decided to build on it, we’ve looked to learn from our mistakes. Next season that is something we are going to try to do as well. We have

got so much ambition and talent in the squad that we believe we can go all the way and win it.

“To get to the Champions League final there are a lot of lessons to be learned and in the pre -season we will dissect the game and learn from our mistakes.”

W inks also defended team-mate Mo ussa Sissoko, who gave away a penalty after 23 seconds which gave Spurs the worst possible start to the match. S adio Mane scooped the ball into the air and Sissoko had his arms spread wide.

“This season he has arguably been our best player – he has been our players’ player,” Winks said. “He made his mistake, he gave away the handball and that happens. Nobody is blaming him or pointing fingers at him because ultimately we would not be where we are today if it was not for his contribution this year.”
