Three miles might not seem far but if you’re 11 years old its going to take 45 minutes to an hour to do that kind of distance. As for taking a bike, what if you can’t ride/afford a bike. Who wants to do a three-mile walk and then start your day at work?

Buses to school are the safest option for kids, walking for miles in all types of weather especially in winter when it’s dark before and after school.

I’m not sure why it should be free. Surely a reasonable charge and keeping the service would be preferable. Plenty of children travel to school in the cities on public transport for the price of a ticket. Had consultation with parents been pursued, perhaps a properly-costed solution would have worked.
