Scots fall short of semi-final place by losing in shootout

- By CRAIG MADDEN

Scotland missed the chance to move into the semi-finals of the FIH Series Finals when their tie against the Czech Republic disappointingly finished goalless in normal time and the Czechs won 4-3 in a penalty shootout.

Sarah Jamieson (2) and Kaz Cuthbert were Scotland’s only scorers as the shoot-out moved into sudden death, and it was the Czechs who kept their cool to clinch the winner.

The first half was a rather tentative affair, the Scots having most of the possession but few chances, Emily Dark missed a strong cross while Sarah Jamieson had her effort smothered by the keeper.

The Scots were more aggressive in the third quarter. Bex Condie’s penalty corner attempt was charged down and a Fiona Semple slap shot was easily saved.

Scotland had all the chances in the final quarter but lack of composure in the circle proved their downfall. On the final whistle Bex Condie had a chance to win the game but her flick was blocked by the keeper.

Meanwhile, Scotland’s Chris Grassick will return to Great Britain duty after an absence of 18 months in today’s FIH Pro League fixture against the Netherlands in London.

The Scotland captain has been plagued by a longterm leg injury but has persisted with his rehabilitation programme to get back to match fitness.

Danny Kerry, GB’S head coach, said: “I’m delighted for Chris, it’s been a long road back and it’s been good to see him looking sharp in training despite months of rehab.

“It’s a credit to Chris in terms of his perseverance in testing circumstances.”

Grassick is joined by Scotland striker Alan Forsyth in the Great Britain line-up.

England striker Ashley Jackson also makes a return, his first GB outing since the Rio Olympics.

However, Scots Amy Costello and keeper Nikki Cochrane are rested for the GB women’s game against the Netherlands, only Sarah Robertson retaining her place.
