Waterfront woe

-

A first look at fresh plans for four tower blocks overlooking Leith waterfront have not attracted a vote of confidence from readers. They look as stale as anything that’s subsequently been knocked down since the 60s. I mean, is build ‘em cheap, build ‘em high still an aesthetic we need in Leith? Where is architectural imagination when it comes to building housing in this city? Developers need to get a grip and stop lazy, off the peg development, it might be big, but it ain’t clever!

Raymond Rose Edinburgh has some of the most amazing buildings in the world built hundreds of years ago – and that’s the best they can do.

Ann Robb The line that alarms me is the provision of “study rooms” – more student flats. They should be allowed to build them if half were really affordable flats for Edinburghers, not just Airbnbs for investors.

John Cromb Absolutely horrible to look at and it seems that things are going backward. Grampian House and Cairngorm House were demolished because high rise was no longer seen as an appropriate housing solution, but now they want to build these. Also, no mention of badly need social housing. 245 flats, but only 71 general parking spaces? There should be at least one per household, and I can only imagine that residents will end up parking vehicles in the surrounding area. I hope this proposal is firmly rejected.

Louise Wilson Looks like Karl Marx Allee in Berlin.

Fi Liddle Hopefully they will build a new school in the area. They have built a shed load of new flats at Asda, loads of new houses on Waterfront Avenue, are they just going to keep building and not provide schools or doctors surgeries for the people who buy them?

Claire Smith This is what you get when an architect gives his bairn a Lego set.
