The Washington Nationals breezed past the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-4 with pitcher Stephen Strasburg striking out nine in seven innings. The Nationals snapped a three-game losing streak in a dominating performanc­e at Nationals Park with Brian Dozier and Juan Soto both scoring home runs. But Strasburg was the star, allowing only two hits and one run in his 100 pitches as Washington held on to the last wild card spot.

The Minnesota Twins put five on the board in the first inning as they notched up an 11-1 win over the Chicago White Sox. Four Twins went deep in the victory, with Max Kepler recording his 28th homer of the season.

Elsewhere, the New York Mets piled on six runs in the first and restricted the Pittsburgh Pirates to four in the ninth to hold on for a 8-7 win, their fourth in a row. There was also joy for MLB’S other New York side with the Yankees recording a 9-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox, while the Philadelph­ia Phillies saw off the Atlanta Braves 9-4.

Kyle Schwarber hit two homers as the Chicago Cubs hammered the Milwaukee Brewers 11-4, the Cleveland Indians went down 9-6 to the Kansas City Royals and Jose Altuve recorded his 1,500th hit – a three-run homer – as the Houston Astros saw off the St Louis Cardinals 6-2.
