#ENID BLYTON

The Royal Mint has revealed that plans to put children’s author Enid Blyton’s face on a commemorative 50p were dumped, because many view her books as ‘racist’, ‘sexist’ and ‘homophobic’.

@soulmandy wrote:” She was none of those things. Her books are full of decency and good manners. The character of George was way ahead of the times, and gave validation to little tomboys and butches. She deserves a coin.”

@shazzyrb tweeted: “As a black person racism always existed. It might have been acceptable for white people back then but it never was or has been for us. It’s easy for white people to say ‘it was acceptable then’ because you made the decisions.”

@maxdrum added: “I am sick to death of ‘offended’ people. I read Enid Blyton books as a child. You can’t rewrite history. Get over yourselves and find something else to expel your hot air on.”

@jamie_wallis said: “As a gay man, I have no problem with Enid Blyton being celebrated. She lived in a different time before Stonewall & the Pride movement and had she lived today her views may have been different. Attitudes have moved on with time. We must afford her the benefit of the doubt.”

#GBBO

The Great British Bake Off returned last night and people were very excited at the prospect.

@pipnicoletti tweeted: “I am very excited!”

@lawrenceofthe said: “That’s it. Autumn has landed. I will always associate GBBO with squirrels and their nuts.”

@thehempshop added: “Can’t wait for this! Bring on the cake!”

@Maddison90210 wrote: “Wish it didn’t take a year to get to Canada. Really enjoying whatever season we are watching here now.”

@Dbeasleyharling, a previous contestant, had some information which may help Canadians. He wrote: “AMERICANS!!! Bake Off will be on US Netflix 3 days after it airs in the UK. This is not a drill!”

@Lostvoice3 wrote: “My thanks to Paul, since his indiscretions my wife refuses to watch and I hate it.”

@Caloriedodger wrote: “I totally forgot it was starting tonight! Right, I think I’ll be leaving the office early tonight and making some banana pancakes at home with the little fella before the show begins.”
