Mchugh will settle for a gritty win in Inverness

- By CRAIG P STEWART

Morton striker Bob Mchugh reckons manager David Hopkin and his squad would gladly sacrifice some of his team’s swashbuckling style for a gritty 1-0 win at Inverness Caledonian Thistle tonight.

The Greenock side roared back from two goals down at half-time last Friday to defeat Partick Thistle 3-2 at Cappielow, however Mchugh recognises that Morton should not be relying on winning the hard way.

Mchugh said: “It was a happy dressing room at the end of the Thistle game and a contrast to how we felt at half-time. We were delighted to get back into things, but we know that we gifted away chances and goals in the first half. We cannot do that again and expect to win.

“It was a great way to pick up three points, but the manager would take a clean sheet and a 1-0 win at Inverness. To be honest we all would.

“We are a side that can score goals, but we should not be looking to score three or four to win a game every week.”

Mchugh added: “Inverness have a good squad and are always difficult at home. We have a chance of winning there as we can score but we need to defend properly to increase that chance.”

Inverness boss John Robertson does not expect Morton to curb their attacking style despite Mchugh’s view that they will tighten up.

Robertson reckons that former Livingston manager Hopkin has used familiarity to remodel the Greenock side. He said: “David has brought in players that he knows well and players he has worked with in the past. He has hit the ground running and their good start to the season is down to him.

“They are playing with a lot more attacking freedom as David likes to get the ball forward quickly, he likes to compete in the opposition half. It is working so I don’t see it changing.”
