Children take centre stage again at Mòd
● Singing silver medals up for grabs in Glasgow competitions
The coveted children’s Traditional and Prescribed Singing Silver Medals are up for grabs today at the Royal National Mòd in Glasgow, on the final day of children’s competitions.
There was fierce competition yesterday with young people aged from five to 18 vying for awards in music, song, drama, Highland dancing, literature and poetry.
Andrew Gordon, 12, from Fife, was the winner of the Dunoon Observer and Argyllshire Standard Medal in the solo boys under-13 singing category, while 15-yearold Aimee Georgeson from Dingwall won the James C Macphee medal after what organisers called “an incredible performance” in the solo girls 13-15 singing category.
Pupils from Sgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu were the winners of the under-13 drama competition.
John Morrison, chief executive of An Comunn Gàidhealach, said: “There is an abundance of young talent in the Gaelic community and it is fantastic to see these incredible young ambassadors get this year’s competitions under way. The event has already got off to an exciting start and I’m looking forward to seeing what else is in store for the remainder of the week.
“It is great to be back in Glasgow, the City of the Gaels, which has been so welcoming to us. We thank the community for helping us kickstart the festival in style, with some amazing competitions and events still to come.”
Adult competitions will begin tomorrow, with a literature day, and contests for the Silverpendantandgoldmedal for solo singing.
The Traditional Final competition is on Thursday, with the Lorne Shield and Sheriff Macmaster Campbell competitions broadcast live on BBC Alba for the third year running.
