An independent Scotland could take its place in the European Union “relatively comfortably and relatively quickly”, according to a leading law professor.

“Provided we are prepared to meet the obligations of membership,” glibly states the professor at the SNP conference. That includes debt/gdp ratio of three per cent. Scotland’s currently stands at around nine per cent. That amounts to around £10 billion in cuts to services/and or significant tax rises. The SNP’S own Growth Commission described this as many years of austerity. And of course Nicola has refused to rule out a hard border with England, and all that entails. So not “relatively comfortably” as the professor glibly suggests..

So we have new masters instead of the English. So this is the “independence” Sturgeon is giving you. And if we ever wanted to leave? Well, you see Brexit.

Bill Logie

Independence first, then deal with the issues under an independent Scotland away from the clutches of Westminster. Anything is better than being in the clutches of Westminster. Question: If Scotland is such a financial burden, why will they not let Scotland go?

Peter Anderson

People say things to suit their agendas. Brexiteers said a deal would be easy, Nats say the EU would welcome an independent Scotland. Most of the time it’s just lies to achieve their own aims.

Hugh Could or could not. Since the veto is being done away with that won’t matter. By the time a separate Scotland meets the economic entry criteria it will be majority vote only anyway. By the time we have our own proven currency and a small enough deficit it will be at least a decade down the line. Plus most of the separatist EU love is just to cause trouble and highlight their case. I’d be very surprised if true Nationalists vote for a seperate Scotland to rejoin the EU under their terms. No rebate, no opt outs, no veto. Not to mention a requirement to work towards adopting the euro.

Larry Mair

This is getting boring. In 2014, we voted to remain part of the UK. In 2016, the UK voted to leave the EU. The SNP just can’t accept the outcome of both referendums. Time that they grew up and stopped acting like a bunch of spoiled brats.

Steven Oliver If Scotland ever gets independence the EU as we see it today will probably not exist.

Thomas Hook The scaremongering is going into overdrive. Westminister is living in fear of losing its breadbasket.

Craig Hollywood

The Spanish threat is a fiction. Catalonia is a province of Spain. Scotland is not a province of the UK. The unionists will try anything to pretend the Scots cannot possibly be independent.
